Executive Summary Submission Round

Teams need to submit their pitch in 1-slider PPT. Teams can also submit a 1 minute video describing their idea along with the PPT. At this stage you need to keep it short, simple and attract our attention!

All that you need to know about Steel-a-thon 2020

Tata Steel’s Steel-a-thon 2020 is an Annual Business Challenges for premier B-Schools in India. It gives students the chance to work on real-life business challenges as well as provide an opportunity to get mentored by Tata Steel Senior Leadership and Management.

B-Schools students are invited to form teams and submit their ideas on real-life management challenges.

Eligibility Criteria & Team Formulation:

  • Students can constitute a team with 3 members.

  • The contest is open to all first-year students of full-time 2-year PGP programs of the above-mentioned campuses. Executive, part-time programs, etc. are not eligible to compete.

Rules:

  • The participating team must have 3 members.
  • Teams with gender-diverse composition will be appreciated.
  • A student can be a part of only one team.
  • Any deviation from the above-mentioned guidelines will result in immediate disqualification of the entire team.

Competition Structure:

Round 1: Executive Summary Submission Round

  • Shortlisted teams can choose from multiple cases and submit their ideas/solutions for one case.
  • Teams will be required to submit a 1-slider PPT of their proposed solution in the prescribed format.  
  • Teams can also submit a 1 minute video describing their idea along with the PPT. (Optional)
  • The last day of submission of entries will be 6th December 2020, 11:59 PM.
  • All the teams are requested to submit their entries a few hours before the deadline to avoid any last-minute hassle.
  • Besides, the teams would be able to view and change their submissions anytime before the submission deadline. Hence, we would recommend the teams to make their submission at the earliest.
  • For Video:
    • The video should be in .mp4 format only.
    • The file size of the video should not exceed 15 MB.
    • No special characters in the video file name apart from _ (underscore)

Round 2: Detailed Presentation Submission

  • The respective teams will upload their entry on the submission page as a .pptm/.pptx/.ppt file.
  • NOTE: There is no limitation on the number of slides and the formats should be strictly followed.
  • The presentation should be structured based on presentation duration i.e. 8 minutes.
  • Entries must be submitted before the deadline, which will be communicated through the website. 
  • Based on the case submissions, we'll shortlist the finalists.

Round 3: Virtual Presentation

  • These teams will present a detailed presentation on the case in front of the esteemed jury.
  • Each team will get 8 minutes to present and 7 mins for Q&A (A total of 15 minutes).
  • 3 teams shortlisted from each case domain will proceed to the grand finale.

Grand Finale

  • The national finalists will get a chance to present to the senior leadership team of Tata Steel.
  • The national finale will be held on 19th December 2020.
  • Further details of the round will be disclosed after all the virtual presentations are complete.

Tata Steel - We Innovate

Organization Structure:

  • India- Tata Steel was established in India as Asia’s first integrated private steel company in 1907. With this, they also developed India’s first industrial city at Jamshedpur. Today, they are among the leading global steel companies.
  • Europe- Tata Steel is the second-largest steel producer in Europe with a crude steel production capacity of over 12.1 MnTPA. They established their presence in the European continent after acquiring Corus in 2007.
  • SouthEast Asia- Tata Steel’s operations in South-East Asia began in 2004 with the acquisition of NatSteel, Singapore.   1. TATA Ferromag- The Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division, commonly known as FAMD, is the largest non-steel business unit of Tata Steel. With manganese and chrome ore reserves in the mineral-rich state- Odisha, FAMD has set up an integrated value chain, commencing with mining, production, beneficiation, and sales of Ferroalloys. It is also the leading manganese alloy producer in India and also leading as a supplier of dolomite and pyroxenite. The Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division offers three brands under its umbrella - Tata Tiscrome, Tata Silcomag, and Tata Ferromag.
    1. Tata Tiscrome is widely used as an alloying agent in the production of stainless steel and carbon since it offers corrosion resistance and also increases the life of the stainless steel.     2. Launched by Tata Steel, Tata Silcomag is India’s first branded Silico Manganese. News and Facts:

  1. The Board of Directors of Tata Steel and Tata Steel BSL have proposed a merger of both the companies in the interest of maximizing value to all stakeholders. The merger will drive operational synergies and efficiencies, reduce the regulatory burden and simplify the group structure. Both Boards have relied on valuation reports and fairness opinions provided by independent experts and recommend a merger ratio of 15 shares of Tata Steel BSL for every 1 share of Tata Steel. The merger is subject to shareholders and other regulatory approvals.
  2. Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp AG are working together to secure the required regulatory approvals for the proposed 50:50 joint venture in Europe. The European Commission has issued its ‘Statement of Objection’ for which both Tata Steel and ThyssenKrupp AG have recently submitted a comprehensive package of proposed remedies.
  3. The acquisition process of Usha Martin’s steel business through Tata Sponge Iron Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, has recently been completed for a cash consideration of Rs. 4,094 crores. It comprises of specialized 1 MTPA alloy-based manufacturing capacity in a long product segment based in Jamshedpur and captive power plants.
